* Uyuni Salt Lake Tour

The Uyuni Salt Desert is the largest salt-flat in the world,
covering 12,000 km2 at an elevation of 3,660m (11,811ft).
The origin of this salt relates to the theory that its water was originally
part of a prehistoric salt lake which covered most of south-western Bolivia.
Its subsequent partial evaporation has left behind a large amount of salt -
estimated to contain 10 billion tonnes of fine salt reserves.
The only harvesters of this resource are the local campesinos armed
with nothing more than picks and shovels. Isla de Pescadores, in the middle of the saltpan,
has spectacular stands of cactus and is home to a stranded colony of vizcachas
(long-tailed rodents related to the chinchilla). The village of Uyuni, south-east of the saltpan,
is the best base for excursions.
